About Ananda in the Himalayas

Ananda in the Himalayas is a wellness retreat in the Himalayan foothills of northern India, set within a 100-acre Maharaja's Palace Estate above the Ganges River valley. Surrounded by Sal forest and overlooking the spiritual town of Rishikesh, it is one of the most recognised Ayurveda and wellness destinations in Asia — with a 25,000 sq ft spa, 24 treatment rooms and a team of Ayurvedic doctors, Western physicians, yoga teachers, nutritionists and physiotherapists on site.

Programmes draw on traditional Ayurveda, yoga and meditation alongside Vedanta — the ancient Vedic philosophy of dynamic action and mental peace, with daily talks by resident Vedanta teachers — international therapies and personalised wellness cuisine. Every stay begins with a consultation that shapes the programme around individual health goals — whether the focus is Panchakarma detox, stress management, sleep or weight management.

Who It's For

Ananda in the Himalayas suits guests looking for a traditional Ayurveda and yoga retreat in India, where the programme is shaped around individual health goals from the first consultation and delivered by a medical team rather than a spa team. The Himalayan setting and the spiritual energy of Rishikesh give it a particular character that's hard to replicate elsewhere. It's particularly suited to:

01

Those drawn to traditional Ayurveda and Panchakarma

Every programme begins with a resident doctor's consultation — Panchakarma delivered with full medical oversight.

02

Those wanting to deepen a yoga or meditation practice

Traditional Hatha yoga and Raja Yoga meditation daily, with Vedanta philosophy talks and visiting Masters through the year.

03

Solo travellers looking for a supported wellness experience

Daily group yoga, meditation and Vedanta talks within 100 acres of estate to retreat into between sessions.

04

Those ready to commit proper time to their health

Programmes addressing physical health, hormonal balance, chronic conditions and sleep — each requiring time to work properly.

Hotel Facilities

The estate runs to 100 acres of Sal forest and landscaped gardens above the Ganges valley, with a jogging track through the grounds, an amphitheatre and music pavilion set among the trees, and an outdoor temperature-controlled pool beside the spa with a deck and lounge beds around it.

Inside there is a library, reading lounges and a gymnasium with cardio, strength and functional training equipment, where personal trainers run individual and group sessions. Group activities run daily and are optional — yoga, meditation, fitness and outdoor training classes, Vedanta talks, weekly cooking classes and guided treks. Yoga is traditional Hatha, taught in the open-air pavilion above the valley. Meditation follows the Raja Yoga tradition, covering Yoga Nidra, Chakra Shuddhi, Antar Mouna, Ajapa Japa and Trataka.

Wellness Facilities

The spa spans 25,000 sq ft with 24 treatment rooms, and every stay begins with a consultation that sets what follows. Ayurvedic doctors, Western physicians, nutritionists, yoga teachers and fitness specialists work across the same programme.

Ayurvedic therapies include Abhyanga, Shirodhara and the full Panchakarma, alongside Rasayana rejuvenation. International treatments cover Thai massage, reflexology, aromatherapy and Tibetan Kuu Nye. Emotional healing works through spiritual psychology, hypnosis, regression, inner child healing and energy therapies. Visiting Masters run workshops and private sessions through the year.

The physiotherapy department runs diagnostic assessment and treatment with Class IV lasers, ZRT matrix therapy, joint alignment tools and interferential therapy. Hydrotherapy has steam rooms, saunas, a Kneipp foot bath and a cold plunge pool.

Dining

Menus follow the dosha and the programme — what arrives at the table comes out of the Ayurvedic consultation. Herbs and kitchen spices are grown in Ananda's own garden, vegetables and fruit come largely from local farms, and nothing is prepared with artificial salts, colours, flavours or preservatives. Drinking water is bottled on site in reusable glass. Alcohol is available on request but may be restricted depending on the programme.

The main restaurant sits in a grove of ancient Sal trees with a treetop deck for outdoor tables. Afternoon tea and light snacks are served at the Restaurant Pavilion, and there is a poolside menu. Private dining can be arranged across the estate.

Good to Know

Kurta pyjamas are offered to every guest, cut for comfort through a day of treatments and worn as easily at dinner as in the spa, which keeps packing light

Accommodation

The 75 rooms are spread down the hillside below the palace, most of them in a single block with the villas set apart in their own grounds. Every room faces either the Ganges valley or the palace and its gardens, and every one has a balcony, a terrace or a deck of its own.

Rooms are plainly furnished, with walk-in closets and bathtubs set under windows so the view carries into the bathroom. Aromatic baths can be run by housekeeping on request. Pillows come from a menu that runs to a neck support option, and a card left out at night sets the morning tea, a ginger, honey and lemon elixir brought to the room. Fresh cotton kurta pyjamas are left daily, worn on the estate and into Rishikesh for the Ganga Aarti.

Location

Ananda sits on a hill at Narendra Nagar above Rishikesh, on the palace estate of the Maharaja of Tehri Garhwal, with Sal forest around it and the Ganges running through the valley below. Jolly Grant Airport at Dehradun is 35 kilometres away — around 40 minutes by road and 45 minutes by air from Delhi.

Rishikesh is where the Beatles came to study meditation in 1968, and the Ganga Aarti is still performed on the riverbank at dusk. Rajaji National Park lies south of the estate with Asiatic elephants and more than 400 bird species, and the temples at Kunjapuri and Neelkanth Mahadev are within reach.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Ananda in the Himalayas and what makes it special?

Ananda in the Himalayas is a wellness retreat in the Himalayan foothills near Rishikesh, set within a 100-acre Maharaja's Palace Estate above the Ganges valley. With a 25,000 sq ft spa, 24 treatment rooms and a team of Ayurvedic doctors, Western physicians, yoga teachers, nutritionists and physiotherapists on site, the retreat combines clinical Ayurvedic depth with a Himalayan palace setting that gives it a distinctive character among wellness retreats in India.

What Ayurvedic treatments and programmes are available?

Every programme begins with a consultation with a resident Ayurvedic doctor, who prescribes the treatments, diet and daily schedule. Ayurvedic therapies include Abhyanga, Shirodhara and the full Panchakarma, alongside Rasayana rejuvenation. International treatments cover Thai massage, reflexology, aromatherapy and Tibetan Kuu Nye, and the physiotherapy department runs diagnostic assessment and treatment with Class IV lasers, ZRT matrix therapy and interferential therapy. Sixteen programmes are available covering Panchakarma, stress management, weight management, holistic yoga, meditation, chronic pain, hormonal rebalance, sleep enhancement and more.

What is Panchakarma and is Ananda a good place to do it?

Panchakarma is Ayurveda's classical five-action detoxification process — a 21-night programme delivered here with full medical oversight by resident Ayurvedic doctors. The Himalayan setting, the estate grounds and the medical team make it a distinctive choice for a Panchakarma retreat in Rishikesh, with enough space and quiet to complete the process properly.

What yoga and meditation is available?

Traditional Hatha yoga is taught daily in the open-air pavilion above the Ganges valley, with Raja Yoga meditation covering Yoga Nidra, Chakra Shuddhi, Antar Mouna, Ajapa Japa and Trataka. Vedanta philosophy talks run through the week with resident teachers, and visiting Masters run workshops and private sessions through the year. Holistic Yoga and Dhyana Meditation are also available as standalone programmes.

What is the food like at Ananda?

Menus follow the dosha and the programme — what arrives at the table comes out of the Ayurvedic consultation. Herbs and kitchen spices are grown in Ananda's own garden, vegetables and fruit come largely from local farms, and nothing is prepared with artificial salts, colours, flavours or preservatives. Drinking water is bottled on site in reusable glass. Alcohol is available on request but may be restricted depending on the programme.

Is Ananda in the Himalayas suitable for solo travellers?

Many guests arrive alone. Daily group yoga, meditation, Vedanta talks and communal dining create natural opportunities to connect, and the structured programme provides a rhythm that suits solo travel particularly well. The estate's scale — 100 acres of Sal forest and gardens — gives plenty of space for quiet time between sessions.

What is a typical day like at Ananda?

Days begin with yoga or meditation in the open-air pavilion, followed by an Ayurvedic breakfast. The morning and afternoon are shaped by the personalised programme — treatments, consultations and wellness sessions with time between them for the pool, the gardens or the jogging track through the estate. Evenings are quiet, with dinner at the restaurant followed by optional Vedanta talks, meditation or rest.

When is the best time to visit Ananda in the Himalayas?

Ananda is open year-round. October to March offers clear skies, comfortable temperatures and the best conditions for outdoor yoga and treks. The monsoon months bring lush green forest but heavier rainfall, and the cooler winter months suit guests wanting deeper immersion in the programme.

How long should I stay at Ananda in the Himalayas?

The Foundation Wellness programme starts from 5 nights and works as an introduction to the retreat. Most programmes run for 7, 14 or 21 nights — the full Panchakarma requires 21 nights to complete properly. For most guests, 7 nights gives enough time to settle into the rhythm and begin to feel a real difference before leaving.

How is Ananda different from other Ayurveda retreats in India?

Ananda combines authentic Ayurvedic practice with luxury palace surroundings in a way few places achieve. You receive genuine Ayurvedic expertise and traditional treatments, supported by experienced doctors and practitioners, while enjoying palatial accommodations, excellent cuisine, and attentive service. The Himalayan location also sets it apart – the altitude, mountain views, and connection to Rishikesh's spiritual heritage all contribute to the healing process.

How do I get to Ananda in the Himalayas?

Ananda is located in the Himalayan foothills near Rishikesh, in the state of Uttarakhand. The nearest airport is Dehradun (Jolly Grant Airport), around 40 minutes away by car. Dehradun receives daily flights from Delhi, Mumbai, and other major Indian cities. Private transfers from the airport can be arranged through the retreat or through us when booking. For guests flying internationally, the most common route is via Delhi, with a short onward domestic flight or a scenic drive of around five to six hours.
