Océano Health Spa Hotel
Atlantic Thalassotherapy and F.X. Mayr Medicine
About Océano Health Spa Hotel
Océano Health Spa Hotel sits on the Atlantic coastline of Tenerife's quiet northeast, in the village of Punta del Hidalgo where the Anaga Mountains meet the sea. Family-owned since 1965 and still run by the founding family, the hotel has developed a genuinely diverse health offering over six decades — authentic thalassotherapy using seawater piped directly from the Atlantic, a dedicated F.X. Mayr Centre in a separate villa next door, Ayurvedic treatments and yoga on a rooftop terrace with views of Teide.
The F.X. Mayr Centre was established in 1999 and is now among the most recognised Mayr centres in Europe. Alongside it, the Health Spa programmes range from restorative thalasso and massage weeks to more focused medical health programmes — all within a setting that has nothing in common with resort Tenerife.

Who It's For
Océano suits guests looking for a medically grounded health hotel in Tenerife where the setting has more in common with a wild volcanic coastline than a conventional resort — F.X. Mayr medicine, Atlantic thalassotherapy and Ayurveda under one roof in Punta del Hidalgo. It's particularly suited to:
01
Those seeking F.X. Mayr medicine in Tenerife
Océano's F.X. Mayr Center has been practising the method since 1999, with qualified Mayr physicians guiding every programme from the initial medical examination.
02
Guests wanting thalassotherapy from a direct Atlantic pipeline
Seawater drawn directly from the Atlantic into the hotel's own pipeline, with a Thalasso pool at 34°C, a Piscina Natural and a full sauna wing with hot and cold contrast facilities.
03
Those combining medical wellness with active outdoor pursuits
Yoga, Pilates, tennis, bouldering and guided hikes into the Anaga UNESCO Biosphere Reserve — the laurel forest trails start from the hotel door.
04
Guests who prefer somewhere quieter and less developed
Punta del Hidalgo sits outside resort Tenerife entirely, with the Anaga Mountains behind and a rugged Atlantic coastline in front.
The F. X. Mayr Method
F. X. Mayr medicine is a medically supervised approach to health that places the digestive tract at the centre of overall wellbeing. Developed by Austrian physician Dr Franz Xaver Mayr in the early twentieth century and refined into a modern clinical discipline, the method works on the principle that the gut is the foundation of good health: when digestion is compromised, the effects ripple outward into energy, immunity, hormonal balance and mental clarity.
A Mayr programme combines an individually prescribed diet, ranging from modified fasting to a reduced-calorie alkaline plan, with manual abdominal treatments, intestinal cleansing using Epsom salts, mineral supplementation and measured exercise. The aim is not simply to detox but to retrain the digestive system, reduce inflammation, restore the acid-base balance and activate the body's own capacity for self-regulation.
At Océano, the F. X. Mayr Center has been practising this approach since 1999. Every programme begins with a thorough medical examination and is guided by qualified Mayr physicians throughout.
Hotel Facilities
Océano sits directly on the Atlantic, with the Anaga Mountains rising behind it and the Piscina Natural — the sheltered sea pool — immediately in front. The garden is where most of the time between treatments goes, with an infinity pool and sun loungers looking straight out over the water, and a secluded sun deck with beach chairs on the upper levels for anyone wanting somewhere quieter. There is a rooftop lounge for sundowners, and a bar and library indoors.
The Center of Healthy Motion takes the first floor and looks out over the sea, equipped with TechnoGym cardio machines, free weights and a back stretcher alongside a light-filled yoga studio and the covered rooftop yoga terrace. An outdoor tennis court and bouldering wall sit adjacent, and a weekly programme of group wellness activities runs for all guests, including a morning workout by the sea. Walking routes into the Anaga start at the door, with guided hikes available.
Wellness Facilities
The Health Spa draws directly on the Atlantic. Seawater arrives through the hotel's own pipeline and forms the basis of every thalassotherapy treatment, from algae and chalk wraps in the waterbed to the heated thalasso pool at 34°C, where Ocean Balancing aqua massage takes place. The seawater garden pool sits at around 26°C, and the Piscina Natural in front of the hotel is open year-round.
The sauna wing combines a Finnish sauna at 90°C, a bio sauna, a steam bath and an infrared cabin with a cold plunge pool, an ice fountain and relaxation areas. A garden exit leads directly down to the Piscina Natural, making the contrast between sauna heat and open Atlantic water easy to build into the day.
Treatment rooms cover the full spa menu, from relaxation and therapeutic massage to osteopathy, shiatsu, physiotherapy with diathermy, cupping and manual lymphatic drainage. The Beauty Spa uses Team Dr Joseph and Natura Bissé products. Ayurvedic treatments are delivered by qualified therapists using type-appropriate oils, with the classical menu including Shiro Dhara, Sathabhyanga four-handed massage and Abhyanga.
Dining
La Marea is the hotel restaurant, serving Mediterranean cooking built on Canarian produce — fish and seafood landed from the Atlantic alongside local fruit, vegetables and meat. Health Spa guests dine on the half-board Balance menu, with a breakfast buffet and a three-course evening menu taken in the restaurant or on the terrace.
Mayr guests eat separately in the F.X. Mayr restaurant, where meals are built around mindful eating and locally sourced ingredients including goat's yoghurt and papaya from the surrounding area. Nutrition is a working part of every Mayr programme, planned alongside the treatments.
Good to Know
Accommodation
The hotel has 96 rooms and suites, all with a sea view over the bay of Punta del Hidalgo, and most with a balcony or terrace. Interiors use warm tones and natural materials, taking their palette from the mountains and the water outside.
Location
Océano sits at Punta del Hidalgo, a fishing village on Tenerife's green north coast where the Anaga Mountains come down to the Atlantic. The village keeps its own rhythm — a lighthouse out on the headland, a few seafood restaurants and shops along the front, and Santa Cruz around 25 kilometres away. Behind the hotel the Anaga range is a UNESCO biosphere reserve of laurel forest and volcanic paths, with guided hikes available from the hotel's own guide. Tenerife Norte Airport is around 30 minutes away; Tenerife Sur, which handles most international flights, is around 60 minutes.

Frequently Asked Questions
What makes Océano Health Spa Hotel different from other wellness hotels in Tenerife?
Océano is one of the few hotels in Tenerife with a genuine medical health offer — seawater piped directly from the Atlantic and used throughout thalassotherapy treatments, and an affiliated F.X. Mayr clinic in Tenerife operating since 1999 in a separate villa next door. Ayurvedic treatments, yoga on the Atlantic rooftop terrace and a full Health Spa programme sit alongside the Mayr offer in a setting that feels entirely removed from the resort areas of the south.
What is F. X. Mayr medicine and is it suitable for me?
F. X. Mayr medicine is a medically supervised approach that places digestive health at the centre of overall wellbeing. It combines a prescribed fasting diet, intestinal cleansing, manual abdominal treatments and individually calibrated exercise to support gut function, reduce inflammation and restore the body's natural balance. It is suitable for a wide range of people, from those with specific digestive concerns to those looking to reset after a period of sustained stress. Every programme begins with a full medical examination.
How long do I need to stay to do a Mayr programme at Océano?
The minimum stay is 10 nights for the Detox, Active and Mental Balance programmes, and 14 nights for the Classic. For lasting results, the F. X. Mayr Center recommends two to three weeks. Shorter Health Spa programmes including thalasso, Ayurvedic and yoga weeks are available from seven nights.
Where is Océano Health Spa Hotel located?
Océano is in Punta del Hidalgo on Tenerife's northeast coast, around 30 minutes from Tenerife North airport. The village sits at the foot of the Anaga Mountains, a UNESCO biosphere reserve, and has a quieter, more local character than the resort areas in the south of the island.
Is Océano suitable for solo travellers?
Many guests arrive alone. The daily rhythm of both the Health Spa and Mayr programmes suits solo stays well — consistent medical support throughout, small-group yoga sessions and complimentary group wellness activities woven through the week.
What's the difference between the Health Spa programmes and the F. X. Mayr programmes?
The Health Spa programmes are week-long and focus on specific goals such as relaxation, weight management, back pain or Ayurvedic restoration. They are medically guided but less intensive than the Mayr offer. The F. X. Mayr programmes are longer, more clinically structured stays centred on digestive health and detoxification, with daily medical oversight and a prescribed dietary approach throughout.
When is the best time to visit Océano Health Spa Hotel?
Océano is open year-round and the north coast microclimate of Punta del Hidalgo — greener and slightly cooler than the south, with the Anaga Mountains providing shelter — makes it a rewarding destination in any month. The Health Spa and Mayr programmes run throughout the year, and winter visits are particularly popular with guests wanting to combine a health cure with mild Atlantic weather.
