About Santani Wellness Resort
Santani Wellness Resort takes its name from the Sanskrit for harmony — a word that shapes everything from the architecture to the daily rhythm. Set in Sri Lanka's hill country near Kandy, on a 116-acre former tea plantation surrounded by forested hills, rice fields and the Hulu River, it was awarded a Michelin Key in 2025 — the first wellness resort in Sri Lanka to receive one.
The daily rhythm is built around Ayurveda, detox, yoga, meditation and the Rasa Haya dining concept — meals shaped around each guest's Ayurvedic constitution rather than a standard menu. Stays are guided by experienced practitioners and shaped around individual wellness goals, with the surrounding landscape a constant presence throughout.

Who It's For
Santani Wellness Resort suits guests looking for an Ayurveda retreat in Sri Lanka with a genuine commitment to disconnection, nature and personalised wellbeing. Set on a 116-acre former tea plantation in the hills above Kandy, it's a deliberately minimal environment — no televisions, limited Wi-Fi, and a daily rhythm built around yoga, treatments and time outdoors. It's particularly suited to:
01
Those seeking a genuine Ayurvedic programme.
Seven wellness pathways cover detox, stress and burnout, gut health, longevity, women's wellbeing, mobility and yoga and meditation — each guided by experienced practitioners and shaped around individual constitution from the first consultation.
02
Guests who want to properly disconnect
No televisions in rooms, intentional design that reduces distraction, and a hilltop setting that makes it easy to leave the rest of the world behind. The Michelin Key 2025-awarded Rasa Haya dining and twice-daily yoga create a clear daily rhythm without feeling rigid.
03
Travellers drawn to nature and wilderness
116 acres of former tea plantation with forest paths, rice fields and the Hulu River running through the grounds. Daily guided nature walks are included, and the setting at 2,800 feet above sea level keeps temperatures comfortably cool year-round
04
Solo travellers and couples valuing calm over social activity
Personalised guidance from arrival, private treatment time, and evenings that support rest rather than entertainment. The intimacy of the property means the atmosphere is quiet and considered rather than resort-like
Hotel Facilities
Santani is spread across 116 acres of former tea plantation, rice paddies and forest, with 300 metres of the Hulu River running along one edge. Seven walking routes start from the property, from the four-kilometre river walk that goes out daily and is included for every guest, to a full day in the Knuckles range.
The main pavilion holds most of the shared space. The restaurant sits on the first floor behind glass, seating 40, with the lounge and bar below and an outdoor sitting area with a bonfire beyond. The infinity pool runs to 16 metres — long enough to swim lengths. A media room with a 15-seat theatre is the one shared space with Wi-Fi, since the rest of the property is kept free of it by design. There is also a jewellery boutique run in partnership with Sifani and a 7kW charging point for electric vehicles.
Wellness Facilities
The Santani Spa is built into the hillside across three levels, taking its cue from the Buddhist meditation caves in the mountains around the estate. Sri Lanka's first full destination spa, it houses the country's first comprehensive hydrotherapy facilities where treatments range from Ayurvedic therapies to Western bodywork.
At the top level, reception and consultation rooms are where assessment and programme planning take place. The middle level holds the hydrotherapy suite — a steam room, a cedar-wood sauna behind a glass wall overlooking the valley, and an open-air thermal salt water bath. The lowest level has four treatment rooms, one for couples, each opening directly onto the paddy fields.
Yoga and meditation take place across two shalas — the Surya Shala at 1,144 square feet and a second pavilion at 818. Visiting practitioners join the team throughout the year under the Masters in Residence programme.
Dining
Dining at Santani follows the Rasa Haya concept — an Ayurvedic approach built around six tastes rather than nutrients: sweet, sour, salty, pungent, bitter and astringent. Ayurveda holds that all six are needed at every meal, taken in a set order, with proportions adjusted according to each guest's dosha. There is no printed menu. The Head of Wellness and the in-house Ayurvedic doctor write each guest's meal plan from their constitution and programme goals, and the internationally trained kitchen team cooks to it.
The restaurant occupies the first floor of the main pavilion, glass on all sides, seating 40, with views across the estate. Three meals a day and unlimited fresh juice and herbal tea are included in every stay, with much of the produce grown in Santani's own greenhouse or sourced from nearby farms. Private dining on the lawn and cooking classes can be arranged with the chefs.
Good to Know
Rooms at Santani are intentionally free from televisions and air conditioning — both deliberate choices to support rest, mental clarity and a lighter environmental footprint. The resort saves over 70% of energy compared to a standard air-conditioned hotel as a result. Wi-Fi is available on request, but the retreat encourages a lighter relationship with technology to help guests fully disconnect during their stay.
Accommodation
Accommodation at Santani consists of standalone chalets spread across the hillside, modelled on the ambalama — the open wayside shelters that once gave pilgrims and traders somewhere to rest on long walks across the island. Each chalet stands alone, spaced so that no room looks onto another, with walls that fold back until there is little separating the interior from the forest outside.
Interiors are deliberately plain, with views across the mountains as the main feature. Rooms are naturally ventilated — no air conditioning is needed at 2,800 feet above sea level — and beds are fitted with mosquito nets. The villas are the exception: air conditioned and considerably larger, each with its own infinity pool, butler and private dining table.
Location
Santani sits at 2,800 feet on the former Aratenna Tea Estate, above the village of Werapitiya and 32 kilometres northwest of Kandy. The Knuckles Mountain Range, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, rises beyond the estate, with the Hulu River, rice paddies and village walking trails closer in. Kandy is an hour by road, home to one of the most sacred relics in Buddhist culture and to the Perahera each August, when more than a hundred adorned elephants parade through the streets. Bandaranaike International Airport lies west, with helicopter transfers landing 15 minutes from the resort and seaplanes 45 minutes away.
