MERANO, ITALY

Palace Merano

Revital® Method, Longevity and Sport Recovery

About Palace Merano

Palace Merano is a medically supervised wellness retreat in the spa town of Merano, in South Tyrol, northern Italy. The hotel has stood for over 100 years in a town that has attracted guests for its therapeutic climate since the 16th century — and Italy's first Medical Spa was developed here more than 20 years ago when Dr Massimiliano Mayrhofer created the Revital® Method, integrating functional and allopathic medicine with Traditional Chinese Medicine across eight specialist departments.

Set at the foot of the Alps, the property sits within its own park of century-old trees in the heart of Merano, with the Tappeiner and Gilf promenades — running along the river and up the hillside — a few minutes' walk from the door. The focus throughout is on medically supervised, individually prescribed programmes delivered within a refined hotel environment.

The Revital® Method

The Revital® Method was developed at Palace Merano more than 20 years ago by Dr Massimiliano Mayrhofer, integrating functional and allopathic medicine with Traditional Chinese Medicine. Built on three pillars — detox, regeneration and rebalancing — the method uses a five-element framework drawn from TCM: an initial diagnostic consultation identifies the element that best represents each guest's current state of health, and that assessment shapes everything that follows.

Every programme is individually prescribed from that consultation — treatments, nutrition and therapies selected across eight specialist departments: a biological analysis laboratory, hydro-mud therapy, bioenergetics, SPA and beauty, health and nutrition, regenerative medical aesthetics, a fitness and sport recovery lab, and a relax and balance department. The team of doctors, nutritionists, naturopaths, therapists and personal trainers works under Dr Mayrhofer's direction throughout each stay.

Hotel Facilities

Palace Merano has its own park in the heart of Merano, planted with century-old trees. The outdoor pool sits within it, heated from May to September with a bar alongside; the indoor pool is open year-round. Between sessions there is a Tea Room serving herbal teas and a Lounge Room with chess and live piano in the evenings. Beyond the gates, the Tappeiner and Gilf promenades run along the river and up the hillside — within a few minutes' walk of the hotel.

Wellness Facilities

The medical spa runs to 6,000sqm across eight departments, with the medical centre built into it. A biological analysis laboratory on site means bloods and specialist tests are run and returned during the stay.

Hydro-mud therapy works in three stages, combining thermal water, mineral muds and hydro-jet treatment to support circulation and lymphatic movement. Bioenergetics uses biofeedback and acupuncture to work on energy flow. Relax and Balance covers the emotional side through mindfulness, music therapy and flotation. SPA and Beauty and Regenerative Medical Aesthetics handle facial and body work, the latter concentrating on cellular regeneration. Health and Nutrition runs three protocols: Palace Detox, Palace Biolight and Palace Sport.

The 250sqm gym is fitted with Technogym equipment, with a 160sqm Sport and Recovery Lab alongside for diagnostics. Yoga, Pilates and mindful movement classes run through the week. There is an indoor pool, sauna and hammam, and a 31-metre outdoor pool with hydromassage.

The St Josef Health Centre sits immediately next door, where guests can add specialist consultations in cardiology, urology, dermatology, gastroenterology and ophthalmology. The Palace doctor remains the reference throughout, so results feed back into the programme.

Dining

Nutrition is part of the medical programme, with plans drawn up by dietitians to work alongside the treatments. Three protocols run across the property.

Palace Detox is largely vegetarian with fish twice a week, built around antioxidants, vitamins and fibre to clear toxins and excess fluid. A fasting or liquid day may be added following a medical consultation. Palace Biolight draws on Mediterranean cooking with larger portions and meat included — designed as a model guests can continue at home. Palace Sport supports the training and recovery programmes.

Meals are served across two restaurants, one for breakfast and lunch and another for dinner. A cookery class runs weekly. The Tea Room serves herbal and green teas, mocktails and barley and chicory coffee alternatives throughout the day. In keeping with its wellness philosophy, Palace Merano does not serve alcohol or traditional coffee. Barley and chicory alternatives are available throughout the day in place of coffee, in support of the detox and rebalancing programmes.

Good to Know

Accommodation

Rooms and suites are spread across the main palace, the castle wing and the upper panoramic floors. Each category takes its name from what it looks at: the Panorama and Comfort rooms face Merano and the mountains of the Tessa Group Nature Park, while the Park categories overlook the hotel's inner park and the pool below. Interiors are calm and generously proportioned, with terraces and balconies on many of the categories and a focus on rest between treatments and consultations.

Location

Palace Merano sits on Via Cavour in the centre of Merano, a spa town in South Tyrol where the Alps meet an unusually mild climate and palms grow alongside vineyards. The hotel has its own park of century-old trees, and beyond it the Tappeiner and Gilf promenades run along the river and up into the hillside. The Trauttmansdorff botanic gardens are a short drive away, and the mountains of the Tessa Group Nature Park rise directly behind the town.

Bolzano Airport is around 30 minutes away. Verona and Innsbruck are each approximately 1 hour 50 minutes by road, with good rail connections into Merano from both.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Revital® Method at Palace Merano?

The Revital® Method is Palace Merano's integrated medical wellness approach, developed by Dr Massimiliano Mayrhofer over more than 20 years. Built on three pillars — detox, regeneration and rebalancing — it uses a five-element framework drawn from Traditional Chinese Medicine. An initial diagnostic consultation identifies each guest's dominant element, which shapes the treatments, nutrition and therapies prescribed across eight specialist departments throughout the stay.

What types of programmes are available at Palace Merano?

Five programmes run from 5 to 7 nights — Revital SPA, Detox and Longevity, Sport and Remise en Forme, Relax and Balance and Sport Performance. Every programme is individually prescribed following the initial consultation, with treatments, nutrition protocol and daily activity tailored to the guest. The St Josef Health Centre next door offers specialist consultations in cardiology, dermatology, gastroenterology and ophthalmology that can be added to any programme.

What is included in a Palace Merano programme?

Every stay includes an initial medical consultation with a diagnostic assessment, a personalised treatment programme across the relevant departments, the nutrition protocol aligned with the chosen programme, access to the gym, yoga and Pilates classes, indoor and outdoor pools, sauna, hammam and relaxation areas. A biological analysis laboratory on site means blood tests and specialist assessments are run and returned during the stay.

What is the food like at Palace Merano?

Nutrition is a working part of the Revital® Method — dietary plans are drawn up by dietitians to work alongside the treatments. Three protocols run across the property: Palace Detox, largely vegetarian with fish twice a week, built around antioxidants and fibre; Palace Biolight, a Mediterranean approach with larger portions designed as a model guests can continue at home; and Palace Sport, supporting training and recovery. Palace Merano does not serve alcohol or traditional coffee — barley and chicory alternatives are available throughout the day.

Is Palace Merano suitable for solo travellers?

Many guests arrive alone. The quiet, refined atmosphere of the historic palace and the focus on individual medical programmes mean solo stays feel purposeful and well supported — the team of doctors, nutritionists and therapists is the constant throughout the stay rather than a group programme or social schedule.

When is the best time to visit Palace Merano?

Palace Merano is open year-round. Merano's unusually mild climate — palms and citrus trees grow alongside Alpine vineyards — makes it a rewarding destination in every season. Spring and autumn bring the most varied weather for the town's celebrated promenades and gardens, and winter visits are quiet and well suited to deeper programme work.

How do I get to Palace Merano?

Bolzano Airport is approximately 30 minutes away by road. Verona and Innsbruck are each approximately 1 hour 50 minutes away, with good rail connections into Merano from both. Private transfers can be arranged through The Wellness Holiday Boutique as part of your booking.
