BAD WALTERSDORF, AUSTRIA

Ayurveda Resort Mandira

Holistic Ayurveda, Panchakarma and Thermal Spa

About Ayurveda Resort Mandira

Ayurveda Resort Mandira is a family-run Ayurveda retreat in Bad Waltersdorf, in the rolling hills of eastern Styria. One of the very few Ayurveda resorts in Europe with its own thermal spring, it combines traditional Ayurvedic medicine with mineral-rich natural thermal water and over 20 years of cure expertise — a combination that is genuinely unusual in the European context.

The approach blends authentic Ayurveda with Austrian conventional medicine into an integrative programme shaped around each guest's dosha and health goals. Whether the focus is deep cleansing through Panchakarma, stress recovery or longevity and prevention, every cure begins with a medical pulse diagnosis and individual constitutional assessment.

Hotel Facilities

Ayurveda Resort Mandira is set in the rolling hills of eastern Styria, surrounded by vineyards and open countryside. The rooftop yoga and meditation glasshouse looks out across the landscape and is used for guided movement, breathing practice and mindfulness sessions throughout the week.

The Ayurveda garden — planted with medicinal herbs, old trees and sound points — offers a quiet outdoor space between treatments. A library and lounge areas with herbal teas are available indoors, and bicycles including e-bikes can be hired for exploring the surrounding hills and villages.

Wellness Facilities

The wellness area at Mandira spans approximately 1,760sqm and brings together Ayurvedic therapies, the resort's own thermal spring and European spa traditions. The thermal circuit includes a panorama indoor pool at 32°C, outdoor pool at 28°C and a full sauna landscape — Celtic sauna at 90°C, Styrian herbal sauna at 55°C, brine sauna at 75°C, mineral steam bath at 45°C and infrared cabin — alongside an ice grotto and dedicated relaxation rooms including Buddha's Place and Ganesha's Spirit.

Ayurvedic treatments begin with a medical pulse diagnosis and individual constitutional assessment. The treatment menu covers Abhyanga, Shirodhara, Udvartana, Garshan, Padabhyanga, Udanavata® abdominal massage and Pinda Sveda herbal stamp massage alongside classical massages, lymphatic drainage, infrared therapy and hydrotherapy. Beauty treatments use PHYTO5 and Thalgo products.

Dining

Nutrition at Mandira is tailored to each guest's dosha and cure phase, with meals prepared by chef Markus Lengauer using regional and seasonal ingredients from local Styrian farms. The kitchen combines Ayurvedic principles with the gourmet culture of eastern Styria — game from the forests, fish from clear springs and vegetables from nearby farms alongside traditional Ayurvedic preparations.

Guests on Ayurvedic cures follow the Mandira Āhāra system — four nutritional stages adapted to the cure phase and digestive fire (Agni). The Rasayana cure focuses on nourishing and strengthening food. The Detox cure uses light, individually tailored meals including medicinal juices, with homemade crispbread in the evenings. The Panchakarma diet follows a three-phase cleansing approach prescribed by the resident Ayurvedic doctors.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes Ayurveda Resort Mandira unique?

Ayurveda Resort Mandira is a family-run Ayurveda resort in Austria, set in the rolling hills of Bad Waltersdorf in eastern Styria — one of the very few Ayurveda retreats in Europe with its own thermal spring. Over 20 years of cure expertise, a 75% return rate and an interdisciplinary team of Ayurvedic and Western doctors working together give the resort a depth and consistency that keeps guests coming back. The private thermal spring feeds an indoor pool at 32°C and an outdoor pool at 28°C, running through the cure as a therapeutic tool alongside the Ayurvedic treatment programme.

What Ayurvedic programmes are available at Ayurveda Resort Mandira?

Ayurveda Resort Mandira offers a range of programmes focused on areas such as Ayurvedic detox and purification, stress recovery, women’s health, musculoskeletal support, and weight management. All programmes are guided by qualified Ayurvedic practitioners and adapted to individual needs.

What is included in an Ayurvedic stay at Mandira?

Panchakarma is Ayurveda's classical five-action detoxification process, prescribed here by resident Ayurvedic doctors and delivered over 7, 10 or 14 nights. The combination of classical Ayurvedic treatments, the Mandira Āhāra three-phase cleansing diet and the resort's own thermal spring — used as a complementary therapeutic tool throughout — makes Mandira one of the more complete settings for Panchakarma in Europe.

Do you need a consultation before treatments at Ayurveda Resort Mandira?

Yes. Each Ayurvedic programme begins with a detailed consultation to assess individual constitution (dosha), current imbalances, and health objectives. Treatments, oils, and lifestyle recommendations are then personalised accordingly.

What is the food like at Ayurveda Resort Mandira?

Cuisine at Mandira follows Ayurvedic principles using fresh, seasonal, regional ingredients. Menus are adapted to your dosha (constitution) and programme – ranging from gentle, lighter detox meals to more nourishing, restorative dishes. The food is widely praised as unrivalled in Europe.

Is Mandira suitable for guests new to Ayurveda?

The Ayurveda Reset — from 3 nights — is a gentle introduction to the principles and treatments of Ayurveda, with a medical consultation and individual programme from the first day. The team speaks English and is experienced in working with international guests, and the blend of classical Ayurveda with Austrian conventional medicine gives the approach a familiarity that suits first-time guests well.

When is the best time to visit Ayurveda Resort Mandira?

Mandira is open year-round and Ayurvedic cures can be received in any season. April to September offers the warmest and sunniest conditions — the surrounding Styrian hills well suited to walking and cycling between treatments. Winter and early spring are quieter and particularly well suited to deeper cleansing programmes, with the indoor thermal pool and full sauna landscape available throughout the year.
