SRI LANKA

Anantara Kalutara

Luxury Ayurvedic Spa Resort Between River and Ocean

About Anantara Kalutara

Anantara Kalutara Resort is a luxury spa resort in Kalutara on Sri Lanka's southwest coast, set on a peninsula where the Kalu Ganga River meets the Indian Ocean — one of the most distinctive natural settings of any resort on the island. Inspired by the design philosophy of Geoffrey Bawa, Sri Lanka's most celebrated architect, the Tropical Modernist vision runs through every detail of the architecture, the gardens and the relationship between the buildings and the water that surrounds them.

The Anantara Spa has a resident Ayurvedic doctor and nine treatment suites set around lotus waterways, with treatments drawing on authentic Ayurvedic traditions alongside signature Sri Lankan rituals using indigenous king coconut and Ceylon tea. Seven dining venues, a daily Sundown Ceremony of traditional Kalu Yaka dance, cooking classes and a Fishing Guru experience on the river give the stay a character rooted in the culture and landscape of the island.

Hotel Facilities

Anantara Kalutara sits on a peninsula where the Indian Ocean meets the Kalu Ganga River — guests can arrive by road, helicopter to the beach or seaplane onto the lagoon. Two outdoor pools with jacuzzis overlook the water alongside an adults-only pool and a children's pool. An activity tower offers zip-lining, abseiling and rock climbing, and a watersports centre provides kayaking, paddleboarding and fishing on the river. The Aliya Kids' Club runs creative activities for younger guests, a 24-hour Technogym is available throughout the stay and a Bastien Gonzalez luxury manicure and pedicure studio is on site.

The daily Sundown Ceremony — a traditional Kalu Yaka dance on the pool deck at dusk — a Saturday fruit market where local produce arrives by boat along the river, arts and crafts demonstrations at breakfast and a Fishing Guru experience on a traditional Oruwa wooden boat give the stay a cultural depth that feels genuinely rooted in Sri Lanka. The Geoffrey Bawa Library and archery are also available throughout the stay.

Wellness Facilities

The Anantara Spa has nine treatment suites set around three outdoor relaxation areas with lotus waterways. Dr. Tharushika, the resident Ayurvedic doctor, offers free consultations and oversees a treatment menu rooted in authentic Ayurvedic tradition — Abhyanga, Shirodhara and acupuncture alongside signature Sri Lankan rituals drawing on indigenous king coconut and Ceylon green tea. Yoga, Pilates and aqua aerobics take place in and around the open-air pavilion overlooking the water.

Dining

Eight dining venues range from all-day Sri Lankan and international cooking to riverside Asian dining, cliffside Italian and private dining under the stars.

Olu is the heart of the resort's dining — breakfast, lunch and dinner daily in a contemporary space with indoor and outdoor seating, drawing on Sri Lankan flavours alongside international favourites.

Spice Traders journeys through the cuisines of Thailand, India and China in the evenings — a riverside al fresco sala alongside an indoor dining room, with the Kalu Ganga as the backdrop.

Acquolina serves Italian fine dining overlooking the adults-only pool — fresh pasta, seafood and a considered wine list in an intimate coastal setting.

Upper Deck Lounge and Sports Bar sits above the lagoon for afternoon tea, sundowner cocktails and drinks into the evening.

Pool Bar serves light bites and refreshments through the day.

Shisha Garden offers a relaxed al fresco setting for shisha and drinks after dark.

Designer Dining arranges private dining on the beach, by the lagoon or in a treehouse — on request for couples and special occasions.

Spice Spoons is the resort's hands-on Sri Lankan cooking class, beginning with a visit to local markets before returning to cook and eat together.

In-room dining is available 24 hours throughout the stay.

Good to Know

The resort's location between the lagoon and the Indian Ocean is extraordinary — but the ocean here can be rough and is not suitable for swimming. Guests wanting calmer water can take a short tuk-tuk ride to Kalutara South station and a 20-minute train journey to Bentota, a quieter coastal town with swimmable beaches popular with locals.

Accommodation

Anantara Kalutara has 141 rooms, suites and pool villas, all with private balconies or terraces looking out over the Indian Ocean, the Kalu Ganga lagoon or the tropical gardens. The Geoffrey Bawa-inspired interiors carry the Tropical Modernist character of the wider resort into each room — natural materials, island hues and the same relationship between interior and landscape that defines the architecture throughout the property.

Location

Anantara Kalutara sits on Sri Lanka's southwest coast at Kalutara, 90 minutes from Bandaranaike International Airport and one hour from Colombo by road. The historic town of Kalutara is a short tuk-tuk ride away — home to the world's only hollow Buddhist dagoba and a rich spice trading heritage. Galle and its 17th-century Portuguese fort are around an hour and 15 minutes south, and Bentota — with calmer swimming beaches and river safari options — is 30 minutes away. Yala National Park, the Sinharaja Forest Reserve and the Handunugoda tea plantation are all within reach for guests wanting to explore further into the island.
