Wellness Programmes at Anantara Kalutara

Why We Love It

  • The only resort in Sri Lanka with 360-degree ocean and lagoon views: Set where the Kalu Ganga River meets the Indian Ocean - coastal, river, and lagoon frontage all from one property, with rooms overlooking either ocean or river depending on which wing you choose

  • Anantara Spa surrounded by a lotus pond: Two-storey sanctuary with 11 treatment rooms, two yoga pavilions, and Ayurvedic therapies prescribed by resident physicians - set within landscaped gardens that feel like a separate temple compound

  • Seaplane transfers to your own lagoon: Daily scheduled service from Colombo airport direct to the resort's lagoon, plus private charter - one of very few resorts in Sri Lanka where you can land by seaplane at the property

  • Geoffrey Bawa's tropical modernist architecture: Designed by Sri Lanka's most celebrated architect in 1993, with a dedicated Bawa Library on-site featuring his books, projects, and original furniture from his private Colombo house

  • Adventure Tower for adrenaline alongside the spa: 10-metre abseil and 165-metre zip line over the lagoon - rare to find this kind of activity infrastructure at a luxury spa resort, and it works surprisingly well

  • One hour from Colombo, close to Sri Lanka's best sightseeing: Galle Fort, Yala National Park, the Bawa brothers' estates at Brief Garden and Lunuganga, Richmond Castle, tea plantations - the location rewards combining resort time with serious exploration

Hotel Facilities

Whether you’re after a restorative break or something more active, Anantara Kalutara offers a variety of facilities to suit every guest. Unwind by the two lagoon-facing pools with jacuzzis, lounge on the peaceful private beach, or enjoy yoga sessions in the elevated open-air pavilion with 360-degree views. Fitness enthusiasts can make use of the 24-hour gym overlooking the lagoon or take part in activities such as paddleboarding and kayaking. The resort also hosts authentic Sri Lankan cooking classes, ideal for those looking to bring home a new culinary skill.

Wellness Facilities

At the heart of the resort is the Anantara Spa, offering a menu of therapies inspired by time-honoured Ayurvedic traditions. From stress-relieving massages to holistic body rituals, each treatment is tailored to encourage deep relaxation and rejuvenation. Complementing the spa experience are a steam room and a peaceful outdoor relaxation area - ideal for unwinding before or after treatments.

Dining

Olu: offers live cooking stations, daily-themed dinner buffets and an à la carte menu featuring Sri Lankan as well as international favourites from Europe to Asia, Arabia and beyond.

Spice Traders: Discover the mouth-watering epitome of Chinese, Thai and Indian cuisines at the al fresco riverside sala.

Acquolina: Set sail on a seafood-filled culinary experience with fresh coastal fare conjured with Italian passion.

Teppantara: Revel in fresh sea breezes as the master chefs enthral you with delicious teppanyaki creations prepared using the freshest local ingredients.

Good to Know

While the resort boasts a stunning location between a lagoon and the Indian Ocean, the beach’s waters can be rough and aren’t suitable for swimming. For those eager to swim in calmer seas, a short tuk tuk ride to Kalutara South train station followed by a scenic 20-minute train ride will take you to Bentota, a quiet coastal town with swimmable beaches loved by locals and not yet overrun by tourism.

Who It's For

Anantara Kalutara suits guests who want a luxury beach resort in a unique setting, where river meets ocean, with the calm of lagoon-side relaxation, Ayurveda spa depth, and easy access to Sri Lanka's cultural highlights.

It's particularly suited to:

  • Those seeking Ayurveda with resort flexibility: Resident Ayurvedic physicians, dosha-based consultations, 11 treatment rooms in a lotus pond setting - serious Ayurveda depth without the full clinical structure of a dedicated retreat

  • Families with children and teenagers: Aliya Kids' & Teens' Club, lagoon-side pool with children's section, Adventure Tower, watersports centre - the resort absorbs families comfortably alongside couples

  • Guests combining wellness and Sri Lankan sightseeing: One hour from Colombo, close to Galle, Yala, and the best cultural sites — the location works equally well for a pure resort stay or as a base for exploring the southwest coast

  • Those drawn to unique geography: 360-degree ocean and lagoon views, set between river and sea - the physical setting is genuinely one-of-a-kind and delivers sunrise over ocean, sunset over lagoon

  • Seaplane romantics: The ability to arrive by seaplane and land on your own lagoon is a genuine experience differentiator — bucket-list material for some travellers

  • Architecture and design enthusiasts: Geoffrey Bawa's 1993 tropical modernist design, Bawa Library, and the interplay between interior and landscape appeal to design-conscious travellers without dominating the experience

Location

Anantara Kalutara is just a 10-minute tuk tuk ride from the historic riverside town of Kalutara. Its location makes it an ideal base for exploring southern Sri Lanka’s vibrant heritage, from ancient Buddhist shrines and colonial architecture to lush countryside and scenic coastal train rides.
