Vilalara Grand Hotel Algarve

Thalassotherapy Spa and Beachfront Resort

About Vilalara Grand Hotel Algarve

Vilalara Grand Hotel is a five-star beachfront resort on the Algarve coast, set within 11 hectares of gardens on a clifftop above a private golden-sand beach at Porches. Founded in 1966, it has spent six decades attracting discerning guests to one of the Algarve's most private and beautiful stretches of coastline.

In 1990 Vilalara opened Portugal's first thalassotherapy centre — a 2,600sqm spa drawing on the therapeutic properties of Atlantic seawater for treatments, anti-ageing therapies and wellness programmes. Six decades on, the Vilalara Spa and Thalassa remains one of the most comprehensive thalassotherapy destinations in Portugal, with five pools, suites and residences looking out over the Atlantic completing the picture.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Vilalara Grand Hotel and what makes it special?

Vilalara Grand Hotel is a five-star clifftop resort on the Algarve coast, set within 11 hectares of gardens above a private golden-sand beach at Porches. Founded in 1966 and named in honour of the founder's granddaughter Lara, it opened Portugal's first thalassotherapy centre in 1990 — designed by renowned specialist Jean Bobet and visited early on by Princess Diana and former US President Jimmy Carter. Today the Coral restaurant holds a place in the Michelin Guide Portugal 2026, and the resort is a member of Forbes Travel Guide, Mr & Mrs Smith and Traveller Made — a quietly distinguished address that has spent six decades earning its reputation rather than announcing it.

What is thalassotherapy and what does the Vilalara spa offer?

Thalassotherapy is the therapeutic use of seawater and marine elements — seaweed, marine mud, sea air — to restore and revitalise the body. Vilalara's 2,600sqm Vilalara Spa and Thalassa draws on Atlantic seawater sourced directly from the ocean below the clifftop, using it across marine therapies, anti-ageing treatments and wellness programmes. The Wet Area includes an indoor pool, sauna, steam room, ice fountain, ice bath and relaxation area.

What dining options are available at Vilalara?

Six restaurants and a bar give Vilalara one of the most varied dining offers on the Algarve coast. Coral is the resort's signature restaurant, recognised in the Michelin Guide Portugal 2026. A Costa serves Portuguese classics poolside throughout the day — straightforward and always worth revisiting. Raízes is built around fire-led cooking and hyper-local Algarvian produce. Vento serves wellbeing-focused Mediterranean cuisine by the Cascades Pool. Trattoria Pantaleone and Gaivotas complete the picture — Italian comfort and essential Portuguese coastal cooking respectively. A personalised anti-inflammatory meal plan is available as an upgrade for guests wanting nutritional support alongside their programme.

Is Vilalara suitable for families?

Yes — spacious two and three-bedroom residences with fully equipped kitchens and private terraces make it well suited to families and multigenerational groups. A seasonal Kids Club runs through the summer months with activities ranging from children's treasure hunts to guided coastal walks, and there are two tennis courts, a padel court and direct access to a private beach alongside five pools.

How long should I stay at Vilalara?

For guests following a wellness programme, a 5 or 7-night stay gives the most satisfying results for most programme types, with the detox programme also available as a 10-night stay. Guests not following a programme typically stay 4 to 7 nights, combining the spa, beach and dining at their own pace. The Algarve's mild year-round climate makes it a practical destination in any season.
