Alpino Atlântico is one of the few dedicated Ayurveda cure centres in Europe, on a clifftop above the Atlantic at Caniço de Baixo on Madeira's south coast. The Ayurveda concept began here in partnership with Ashoka Ayurveda, who came looking for somewhere in the North Atlantic with the right climate for it, and the island's mild subtropical year suits treatments that need the body kept warm. Two Indian doctors are resident, trained in Ayurvedic medicine in Kerala, and every stay is built from the consultation they give on arrival. The cures run from detox and rejuvenation to weight management, stress and pain relief.

Hotel Facilities
Alpino Atlântico sits on a clifftop above the Atlantic in Caniço de Baixo, about 15 minutes from Funchal, with the ocean visible from most of the hotel. The resting room opens onto a panoramic terrace and is stocked through the day with a library, herbal teas and fresh fruit. A tropical garden planted with fruit trees and an organic herb bed — which supplies the kitchen — has Bali beds and loungers under shade.
The yoga room has the Atlantic filling one wall. An Ayurveda shop sells the oils, teas and accessories used in treatment. Five minutes along the cliff at sister hotel Galomar, guests have free use of the spa and saunas, and the Lido Galomar bathing complex is 300 metres away with sea access cut into the rock.

The Ayurveda Cure Centre is run in partnership with Ashoka Ayurveda, staffed by two resident Indian doctors, 15 therapists and three yoga instructors across seven treatment rooms — with a preparation zone where medicinal herbs are made up on site and treatment oils blended from fresh local herbs. Every stay begins with a consultation with one of the resident doctors, who writes the treatment plan the stay follows. Yoga runs twice daily across multiple styles, with aerial yoga, sound healing and meditation sessions throughout the week, and guided forest bathing and a weekly Ayurvedic cooking workshop available alongside any programme.
Dining
The Ayurveda restaurant opens onto a panoramic terrace above the ocean and serves in-house guests only. Meals are vegetarian and laid out as a buffet across the three doshas — guests take what their consultation points them to. Lunch is the main meal of the day; dinner is served before sunset, in the Ayurvedic way. Hot teas, purified water and aromatic waters are included through the day.
An Ayurvedic chef runs the kitchen, adapting menus further for specific complaints, with herbs from the hotel garden made up into decoctions on the doctor's recommendation. Produce is local, seasonal and organic, grown in volcanic soil. A cooking workshop runs weekly, and adaptations are made for coeliac guests and allergies with advance notice.

Alpino Atlântico sits on a clifftop at Caniço de Baixo, 54 metres above the Atlantic on Madeira's south-eastern coast. The water below is part of the Garajau Underwater Nature Reserve, protected since 1986 and one of the first marine reserves in Portugal. Steps and a lift lead down to the Lido Galomar bathing complex cut into the rock, 300 metres away.
Funchal is 12 kilometres west and the airport 11 kilometres east — around 15 to 20 minutes by road in either direction. Inland, the levadas run through laurel forest with guided walks going out from the hotel.
